The Critical Food Studies Lab is a joint initiative of the IU Food Institute and the IU Department of Geography. We use data, mathematical modeling, and visualization techniques to examine food security, food sovereignty and food justice issues in the United States and, to a lesser degree, throughout the world. We regularly work with those engaged in decision-making and ethnographic approaches in an effort to provide a well- rounded approach to the major hunger crises that face America and the world.
If you would like to participate in undergraduate research, guided by PhD Faculty and Research Scientists working on 'real world' problems - join us for our regular meetings! Learn more on our website and plan your undergraduate research project experience!
Undergrad Research
Sustainability Scholars
The Sustain IU Sustainability Scholar program selects undergraduate students for specific mentor-driven research projects for an academic year. Students spend 8-10 hours per week working on the project with their faculty mentor, receiving a small stipend. In the past, scholars have addressed food system issues such as Farm to Institution, the Supermarketization of African cities, Farmland Access.
Each scholar is part of an annual cohort of peers, creating strong connections to other sustainability topics and students.
Applications open in August for each academic year.
